(Or: "Who says all I listen to is Punk?")
5. "First Light" - Camel
Splendid mood music for a sunrise. Very smooth piece that mysteriously changes from 4/4 time to 3/4 time. Fill your lungs with fresh, sweet morning air and listen to this track!
4. "Swastika Girls" - Robert Fripp and Brian Eno
Ponderous 18+ minute ambient piece that takes almost 8 minutes to get going. But when it does, Eno's swirling, etherial synths and mantra-like guitar loops create a perfect backdrop for Fripp's electric guitar as it claws it's way relentlessly out of your speakers! I just can't listen to this track enough!! This CD always seems to be in my player...
3. "She's Got A Gun (Instrumental)" - Yello
This is a rare instrumental version of a song from Yello's second album, available only on a hard-to-find 12-inch EP... but it's worth the hunt! Spy film-noir feel with a simple but killer guitar solo!
2. "Hall of the Mountain Grill" - Hawkwind
Stunning!! Four arpeggio chords on the piano quietly mix with synth and violin to create one of the most amazing soundscapes I've ever heard!! Listen with your mind and you can hear the breathing of God in this track!!
1. "Over the Gate" - Anthony Phillips
Breathtaking! This piece has reduced me to tears on more than one occasion! The quiet lyrical beauty of it evades mere written description. Acoustic and electric guitars with synth... Wow!
Honourable Mentions:
"The Heavenly Music Corporation" - Robert Fripp and Brian Eno
Dark and moody as storm clouds in the beginning that finally breaks through with a chorus of rainbows descending to earth at the end. 20+ minutes of synth and guitar! (For the interested, this, along with "Swastika Girls", comprises the album "No Pussyfooting".)"Beauty and the Beast" - Anthony Phillips
Not what you'd probably expect, this tune was written in 1976 and is, in Anthony Phillips' own words, "overly festive". Done with two pianos (one being a "pin" piano -- that's a piano with pins in the hammers making it sound rather tinny -- it's brilliant!) and two guitars, this piece swirls and runs rampant... and has a chord progression that's like menthol to my ears! It's a crying shame not many more people have heard of Anthony Phillips. He's truly an undiscovered gem! To see what a prolific artist he is, check out his releases at CD Universe, the best place on the web to buy music!"Slush" - Bonzo Dog (Doo-Dah) Band
If you're paranoid, don't listen to this track! Depressing music with laughter... Creepy!"Neat Fox" - Chama
Jazzy, bouncy tune that gets indelibly etched into your head. @Wheee! The music of Chama, along with other furry composers, can be found at the Furry Music Foundation web site. Please give a listen!"Warriors" - Synergy
Another mood piece. Conjures visions from ancient armies going against impossible odds, to the solitary warrior keeping watch upon the hill throughout the night."A Place in the Wilderness" - Roger Eno
Piano with heavy echo and/or synth. A slow, quiet piece that quite nicely renders the solitude of the deep woods. Deserves to be listened to without distraction in silence and solitude."Rubber West" - Yello
With all due respect, this sounds like something out of a Spaghetti Western! Two gunfighters shoot it out in the American wild west... only one lives to walk away into the stormy night..."Tremulous" - Anthony Phillips
Every time I hear this piece it just makes me want to shout "It's Spring! It's Spring!!" Another @Wheee!"Buenaventura" - Outback
Guitar and Didjeridoo. Refreshing as a cooling breeze rushing through the plains on a warm summer's day. Ahhhh..."Happy Weasel" - Chama
What is it about Chama's music that makes it so irresistable? You can almost see his weasel, that disarmingly cute bundle of fur, bouncing, chittering, and playing along to this happy tune."Vladivostock" - Camper Van Beethoven
A traditional Russian tune that would normally seem out of place with a ska/punk band, but the Campers treat it with respect. I find myself humming it often."Kings Of Speed" - Hawkwind
Saw off the top of your car, hit the highway and crank up this tune! Solid rocker from the Kings of Space Metal!"...One Step Beyond" - Madness
Let's face it, this is just a fun tune! Known to have the sleaziest sounding sax ever recorded, IMHO."Hello Radio" - They Might Be Giants
I call it an instrumental in my book. The only vocal is a plaintive cry of "hello?" spoken through a telephone receiver. Surreal fun from one of my favourite groups!"Lady Is A Tramp" - They Might Be Giants
This proves that it's not what you say but how you say it. This twisted adaptation of the classic song only has one word...and it's delivery is spot on! Always raises a wry smile from me.
Of course, that's about it for the time being... It may stop, but it never ends.
